Our History
Bethel Wellness Community was founded on August 9, 1949, in Evansville, Indiana, through the faith, vision, and dedication of Louise Kuiken, RN. As a Christian and a registered nurse, Ms. Kuiken believed deeply in combining compassionate health care with a commitment to serving God and others. Her calling was simple but powerful: to care for older adults with dignity, respect, and genuine compassion.
From the very beginning, Bethel was a true community effort. Fellow members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church supported Ms. Kuiken in establishing what would become Bethel’s first home at the corner of Mary and Columbia Streets. Among those who played a vital role were Rose “Tibby” Tribby and her husband Albert, affectionately known as “Aunt Tillie” and “Uncle Albert.” Together, they helped turn a shared vision into reality.
Originally operating with a capacity of just 18 beds, Bethel quickly grew as the need for quality elder care became clear. In 1952, the organization purchased its current property, converting an existing home into a 10-bed facility. With continued dedication, prayer, and community support, Bethel expanded once again, opening its present 63-bed facility on January 18, 1959.
Nestled among the gently rolling hills on the north side of Evansville, Bethel Manor has long offered residents a peaceful, retreat-like setting within city limits. The surrounding woods, orchards, and gardens—alive with birds, wildlife, and seasonal beauty—reflect the calm, nurturing environment Bethel has always sought to provide.
As health care needs evolved, Bethel Wellness Community continued to grow while staying true to its mission. In 2020, Bethel opened The Rehab Cottage at Bethel, an innovative, home-like short-term rehabilitation setting designed to help individuals recover after hospitalization and return home safely. The Rehab Cottage reflects Bethel’s long-standing belief that healing happens best in an environment that feels personal, comfortable, and supportive.
Today, Bethel Wellness Community honors more than 75 years of service by combining tradition with innovation. While programs and facilities have expanded over time, the foundation remains unchanged: faith-driven service, compassionate care, and a deep commitment to the individuals and families we serve. With God’s guidance, Bethel’s story continues—serving generations to come.
